Pergolas on the Central Coast

Freestanding, attached and louvred pergolas built to handle Central Coast sun, salt and summer storms.

Pergolas

Overview

A well-built pergola turns a Central Coast backyard into a room you actually use — shaded in summer, warm in winter, and the natural centre of every weekend gathering. Shore Carpentry designs and builds custom pergolas across Terrigal, Avoca, Erina, Gosford, The Entrance and the wider Central Coast, from simple hardwood shade structures to fully engineered outdoor rooms with lighting, fans and pull-down screens.

Every pergola we build is custom. We do not sell kits. That means the posts, beams, rafters and roof system are all sized and detailed to suit your home, your site and how you plan to use the space. During your free on-site consultation we look at sun angles across the seasons, prevailing winds, the roofline of the existing house and how you want the pergola to connect to indoor living — usually with a flush threshold and matching floor level so it reads as one continuous space.

Structurally, we work in dressed hardwood (spotted gum, blackbutt, merbau), treated pine painted to suit your colour scheme, or a hybrid of steel posts and timber rafters where clear spans demand it. Posts are anchored on galvanised stirrups above concrete footings, connections are made with concealed fixings and structural brackets, and everything is engineered to Australian Standards for wind loading — critical on the exposed sections of coast from Wamberal through to Copacabana.

Roof options are where most owners want to talk through choices. Open-batten pergolas with 90x19 or 90x42 hardwood battens give beautiful dappled light and let breeze through. Polycarbonate roofing gives full weather protection with soft diffused light — ideal for outdoor dining year-round. Louvred opening-roof systems (Vergola, Stratco Pivotech and similar) give you the best of both worlds: open to the sky when the weather is perfect, sealed against rain and sun at the push of a button. We install all major brands and can walk you through the price and functionality trade-offs honestly.

Beyond the roof, we integrate the details that make a pergola feel finished: recessed LED downlights and strip lighting, ceiling fans wired by a licensed electrician, cafe blinds or pull-down mesh screens for late-afternoon western sun, timber privacy screens, and built-in bench seating with hidden storage. If you are planning an outdoor kitchen underneath — pizza oven, BBQ cabinetry, bar fridge — we can build the joinery and rough in the services in the same job.

Attached pergolas need careful flashing back into the existing roof to stop water tracking into the wall cavity. We remove tiles or cut sheeting, install a full Colorbond back-flashing over the new roof, and dress everything back neatly. Freestanding pergolas are simpler structurally but we still detail post caps, beam tails and rafter ends so they look intentional, not thrown together.

Council approval depends on the size, height and setback of the structure. Most standalone pergolas under 25 square metres and 3m high qualify as exempt development under NSW Codes SEPP, but attached structures or larger footprints often need a Complying Development Certificate. We handle the paperwork, engineering certificates and inspections so you do not have to chase certifiers.

Shore Carpentry is a licensed and insured NSW builder with 20+ years on Central Coast homes. Every pergola comes with a fixed-price quote after the on-site consult, a written workmanship warranty, and a realistic build timeline — typically 2-3 weeks for a straightforward attached pergola, longer for larger outdoor rooms with roofing, lighting and joinery.

If you are thinking about a pergola for shade, entertaining or just to make more of your yard, book a free on-site quote and we will design something that suits how you actually live.

Common questions

Do I need council approval for a pergola?
Most freestanding pergolas under 25 square metres and 3m high qualify as exempt development in NSW. Attached pergolas or larger structures usually need a Complying Development Certificate. We handle the paperwork and engineering certificates as part of our quote.
Open batten, polycarbonate or louvred roof — which is best?
Open batten looks beautiful and lets breeze through but offers no rain protection. Polycarbonate gives full weather cover with diffused light. Louvred systems (Vergola, Stratco) give you both — closed for weather, open for sun — at roughly 3-4x the cost of polycarbonate. We help you weigh cost vs how much of the year you will use the space.
How much does a pergola cost on the Central Coast?
A basic 3x4m attached hardwood pergola with polycarbonate roof starts around $8,000-12,000. Louvred opening-roof systems for the same footprint run $18,000-28,000. Fully finished outdoor rooms with lighting, fans, screens and joinery sit in the $30,000+ range. Every quote is fixed-price after the on-site measure.
Can you attach a pergola to a tiled or Colorbond roof?
Yes — attaching to existing roofs is standard work. Tiled roofs need tiles lifted, a structural bracket bolted to the rafters, and full flashing dressed back over the new roof. Colorbond roofs use similar principles with a purpose-made back-flashing profile. Detailed correctly, either will stay watertight for the life of the pergola.
How long does construction take?
A straightforward attached pergola runs 1-2 weeks on site. Louvred-roof pergolas add 1 week for system delivery and install. Fully finished outdoor rooms with electrical, joinery and screening typically run 3-4 weeks.
